Why Pakistani Showbiz Must End Age Shaming
🎭 Beyond Age: Why Pakistani Showbiz Must End Age Shaming

In every entertainment industry, an artist should be remembered for talent, dedication, and the ability to leave a lasting impact through unforgettable performances. Unfortunately, in Pakistan, many actresses reach a certain stage in their careers only to discover that public attention gradually shifts away from their acting and begins focusing on something entirely unrelated to their craft—their age.
Whether it is a television drama or a feature film, social media is often filled with comments such as "She is too old for a lead role," "She doesn't look the same anymore," or "It's time for younger actresses to replace her." Sadly, these remarks are becoming increasingly common, despite the fact that many of these performers continue to deliver outstanding performances that younger artists can only aspire to achieve.
This raises an important question that deserves serious discussion rather than emotional reactions.
🎭 Should an artist be judged by age... or by performance?
If we look beyond Pakistan, the answer appears remarkably simple. International entertainment industries have repeatedly demonstrated that exceptional acting has no expiry date. Legendary actresses continue to receive leading roles, prestigious awards, and worldwide appreciation because audiences value their performances instead of counting the number of birthdays they have celebrated.
Hollywood provides numerous examples of artists whose finest work arrived later in their careers. Their success proves that genuine acting is measured through emotional depth, screen presence, and storytelling—not through age.
🌍 The Global Perspective
If we look at the international entertainment industry, the contrast becomes impossible to ignore. Legendary actresses like Meryl Streep have continued playing powerful leading characters well into their seventies, while Helen Mirren has remained one of the world's most respected performers even after the age of seventy-five. Their careers demonstrate that audiences appreciate remarkable performances rather than questioning whether an actor or actress has crossed a particular age.
✨ Great acting has no expiry date.
Unfortunately, the conversation in Pakistan often takes a different direction. Instead of celebrating experience, many discussions quickly turn toward appearance and age. An actress who has spent decades entertaining audiences suddenly finds herself defending something completely unrelated to her talent. Social media comments frequently focus on how old she looks rather than how brilliantly she has performed.
Ironically, this stage of an artist's life is often when experience, confidence, and emotional maturity come together to produce the strongest performances. Years spent in front of the camera teach subtle expressions, emotional control, and character interpretation that cannot simply be learned overnight.
💔 More Than Just Online Criticism
There is another important reality that deserves empathy. Almost every woman naturally wishes to look younger than her actual age. It is a universal human emotion rather than a weakness. When audiences publicly mock actresses because of their age or appearance, they are not merely criticizing celebrities—they are reinforcing unrealistic expectations that affect countless women beyond the entertainment industry.
🎬 Experience should be celebrated—not ridiculed.
Every experienced actress represents decades of dedication, sacrifice, and artistic growth. Instead of appreciating that journey, age shaming reduces years of hard work to a single number. Such attitudes discourage meaningful conversations about performance and shift unnecessary attention toward appearance rather than artistic excellence.
🎬 The Industry Must Also Share the Responsibility
The responsibility does not rest solely with audiences. Pakistan's television and film industry must also rethink how it approaches casting. Too often, leading roles are written and assigned within a very limited age bracket, leaving experienced actresses with fewer opportunities to showcase their remarkable talent. This not only affects artists but also limits the diversity and realism of our storytelling.
Powerful stories require characters from every stage of life. Mature women have their own journeys, emotions, struggles, achievements, and relationships that deserve to be portrayed on screen. By creating meaningful leading roles for experienced actresses, filmmakers can present richer narratives while giving audiences performances that only years of experience can deliver.
🌟 Art has no age. Talent has no expiry date.
History has repeatedly shown that unforgettable performances are never defined by age. Whether an artist is in their twenties, forties, sixties, or beyond, genuine acting has the power to move audiences, inspire emotions, and leave a lasting legacy. Experience should never be seen as a limitation; instead, it should be recognized as one of an actor's greatest strengths.
As viewers, we also have an important role to play. Rather than judging performers by appearance or age, we should evaluate them through the quality of their work. Constructive criticism is essential for every industry, but personal attacks based on growing older contribute nothing to the advancement of Pakistani cinema or television.
🎭 The real question is not whether an actress has grown older.
The real question is whether we are mature enough to appreciate talent beyond age.
Perhaps it is time for Pakistani showbiz to move beyond age shaming and return its focus to what truly matters—exceptional performances, meaningful stories, and artists whose dedication continues to enrich our entertainment industry regardless of their age. After all, great acting is remembered for generations, while age is simply a number that changes with time.
